Electric Vehicle charging points in Fenland
There needs to be more clarity over the impact that a change from Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) to zero-emission transport will have.
Electric is not the only option, but in truth, the only other alternative is Hydrogen. As the average family cannot harvest their hydrogen safely, self-generated electricity topped up by the National Grid will likely prevail.
I recently spoke with someone convinced that if everyone in Whittlesey went electric, every street would be dug up, and a cable (he described with his hands at about 450mm diameter) would need to be laid. Even sub-marine and power station cables are thinner than this.
He then suggested that a home EV charge point costs £2,000. I explained that the modern one I upgraded last year cost significantly less than £2,000. I am sure that the implications of his bias are unintentional, but it made me check out my understanding.
I was aware that the surplus generation of electricity at night and the early hours would bridge much of the gap. I was unaware that the energy required to make a gallon of gasoline (American data) is between 2kW and 3kW. The potential shortfall in energy needed to run EVs is virtually halved when the energy requirement of making petrol is deducted.
Meanwhile, the atmosphere is warming up too fast. We don’t have time to wait around. The house is burning!
I can see that processing fossil fuels will reduce as consumption drops, and the economic dividend will reduce consumption by processors. Most EV charging takes place at home during nighttime. Consequently, demand for daytime charging reduces. Solar generation at home in summertime reduces the cost and carbon footprint.
Another piece of research indicates that Hydrogen generation using electricity is only 1% from renewable and 99% from fossil fuels – small wonder that the companies involved with fossil fuel extraction favour the distribution of Hydrogen for heating and transport.
In conclusion
We still require EV charging points to be made available in Fenland for those without off-street parking or charging facilities, for example, those renting property without a charger and housing built without parking facilities.
