Plastics

Plastic waste generated annually in the UK is estimated to be nearly 5 million tonnes.

Most families throw away about 40kg of plastic per year, which could otherwise be recycled.

Plastic is a huge problem for the planet and reducing the amount we use and throw away is a key point in helping our planet change for the better. It only takes seconds to check the recycling info on containers, so be sure to check if its recyclable before putting it in the normal waste bin.

Plastic bags are still a huge contributor to non recyclable plastics that end up in landfill. Re usable bags are now available at all major supermarkets, it will help save the planet in the long run by swapping over to these. You can also now take your own containers into some supermarkets to fill with fresh food rather than using the small plastic bags on the rolls near the produce.

If you have the option, when considering buying something in a plastic container, if it comes in a glass bottle as well, go for the glass if you can. All glass can be recycled, so its a much better option. Also, if you use bottled water, by buying a metal or BPA free plastic bottle you can drastically reduce the amount of plastic you buy, and its much cheaper in the long run. There are lots of initiatives around to help with refilling reusable bottles, some shops will refill your bottle for you and certain councils are putting water fountains in place for people to refill at.
