Planting Trees

In December 2021 I took part in the ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee’ iniative in Thorney. It is called ‘The Queens Green Canopy’, details can be found here https://queensgreencanopy.org/

The planting was supported by PECT https://www.pect.org.uk/ to help creat a dog walking area on private land. I was representing Thorney Running Club.

Closer to home, I am planting some of the trees I bought last year. When they become a little more established, I will provide a picture, hopefully with the benefit of some flowering spring bulbs that have also been planted to add colour to the green canopy.

It was sad to learn that the annual Straw Bear Festival fell victim to the opposing spread of Coronavirus. In my opinion, the organisers had taken the right decision because infection rates in Whittlesey showed no sign of slowing down when I wrote this in the second week of January 2022. In the first nine days of January, cases in Fenland had increased by 60% and in Peterborough by 83%. This was on top of a doubling of cases through December.

It was pleasing to read about Fenland District Council’s success in maintaining high recycling rates of Refuse collection in 2021. A greater proportion of households now separate the items that can be recycled and ‘Do the Right Thing’. The Street Scene workers do a brilliant job in Whittlesey and the surrounding villages collecting waste that can be recycled and separating it from that destined to landfill.

Whittlesey Street Pride volunteers regularly pick litter, separating litter that can be sorted at the processing plant, thus reducing landfills. We only have one environment – let’s look after it!
