Power Up Free Electricity

UK Power Networks offers surplus green electricity FREE to selected consumers in this area. If your provider has engaged with the scheme and you have a working smart meter – happy days!

The provider will send an email advising when a Power Up occurs. When you opt-in, you can use as much during that time, and you get the energy FREE—use it for charging batteries, washing clothes, dishwasher, refrigeration, air conditioning, hot water, using your [electric] cooker or anything else.

Why are they doing this? Sometimes sustainable energy generation is surplus to requirements. Rather than wasting the electrons, they can be given for free so that peak demand is reduced, which saves the use of more expensive generation plants. The surplus generation is generally from Solar and Wind – so our carbon footprint is reduced, and we get used to making smart meters help us to reduce energy consumption through familiarity with appliance and household consumption.

If you have a smart meter and your energy provider offers Free Electricity, I suggest you engage with them. It may be helpful to install a smart meter for future money-saving initiatives. Meanwhile, renewable energy is contributing to energy independence in the UK. Peak harvesting conditions come and go – and the energy landscape is changing.
